The support of reliable communications among vehicles and the surrounding environment (vehicle-to-everything, V2X) attracts interest from a wide set of industries (e.g., automotive, network operators, service providers, telco vendors), research communities, standardization bodies (e.g., ETSI, 3GPP) and industry associations (e.g., 5GAA). Due to complexity and intrinsic heterogeneity of V2X communications, harmonized efforts from several angles are needed regarding channel modeling, physical up to network layers, network architecture design, application design, etc. The aim of this workshop is to collect such recent advances on V2X. Initiatives such as the European COST CA15104 framework “Inclusive Radio Communication Networks for 5G and beyond (IRACON)” and various EU funded research projects (e.g., 5GCAR) are addressing this topic and might consider the workshop as a relevant for disseminating the findings.

Track 1: Second Workshop on V2X Channel Measurements and Modeling (WVCM 2018)

This workshop is a sequel of the International Workshop on V2X Channel Measurements and Modeling (WVCM 2017) that has successfully been conducted earlier in the PIMRC 2017 in Montreal, Canada.

Vehicular communication is characterized by diverse environments, high mobility of both the communicating entities and their surroundings, and comparatively low antenna heights on vehicles. These characteristics are very different from classical cellular cases and make the vehicular propagation and channel modeling particularly challenging. Additionally, the ultimate goal of next generation V2X communication systems is enabling accident-free cooperative automated driving. To achieve this goal, the communication system will need to enable a diverse set of use cases, which can result in channel conditions not fully explored in the past (e.g., blockage effects caused by densely packed platooning vehicles, communication between vehicles and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, etc.). Finally, in recent years, different frequency bands have been proposed for V2X communications (e.g., in centimeter wave bands, millimeter wave bands, and in visible light spectrum). The impact of frequency band and the propagation characteristics of high frequency (millimeter wave) V2X channels, etc. become very important objects of investigation.

The aim of this workshop is to discuss new V2X modelling and measurement results gained from various international and national activities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Channel models and measurements for V2V, V2I, V2P, and V2N communication.
  • Measurement campaigns in sub-6 GHz (centimeter wave in 700 MHz – 6 GHz), higher frequencies incl. millimeter wave (6 GHz – 100 GHz), visible light spectrum.
  • Measurement campaigns in urban, highway, rural/suburban, indoor (parking garages), train/railway environments.
  • Effects of highly mobile scatterers on V2X channels.
  • Impact of dual mobility on V2X channels.
  • Advances in geometry-based stochastic and deterministic V2X channel modelling.
  • Modeling of blockage and/or mobile scatterer, characterization in platooning scenarios, spatial and temporal consistency for V2X channels, multi antenna systems.
  • Frequency-dependent parametrization of V2X channel models.
  • Comparison of different frequency bands for V2X.
  • Simulation environments in support of more realistic channel modeling (mobility modeling, environment modeling, modeling of new communication modes such as V2P).
  • Implementation of V2X-specific channel models in existing frameworks.
  • Results from large experimental testbeds and field operational tests related to V2X channel modelling.
  • V2X-specific antenna design and placement, and their impact on channel.

Track 2: Workshop on 5G V2X Communications for Connected Autonomous Driving

The upcoming advent of 5G networks aims to provide reliable V2X connectivity to the automotive industry in order to support a wide range of use cases such as platooning, cooperative maneuvers, fleet and traffic management, autonomous and remote driving, etc. The heterogenous nature of V2X use cases poses challenges in developing ad-hoc solutions able to cope with different QoS requirements and different mobility scenarios, together with taking into consideration the interaction of vehicles with the surrounding environment. Several aspects are still under investigation by different research communities, industries and standardization bodies, such as fulfilling V2X QoS requirements together with supporting high mobility, designing ad-hoc network functions to support location-based services with strict delivery deadlines, dynamic adapting V2X application behavior to network changes, enhancing network capabilities at the edge, supporting V2X use cases in roaming and multi-operator scenarios, efficiently exploit different radio access technologies (RATs), etc. Gathering and harmonizing solutions to cope with above challenges will enable the design of a V2X end-to-end network slice, with V2X-tailored solutions from radio, network and application segments.

The aim of this workshop is to collect recent advances and inputs for the design of an automotive network slice, gathering novel works focusing on applications, business, network design, cloud, etc. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Market analysis and business models for V2X with focus on the interaction between automotive, telecom operator and vendor industries.
  • Use case analysis focusing on the interaction between vehicles and other interacting entities e.g., cameras, sensors etc.
  • Automotive Network Slices enablers and design.
  • Advances on V2V, V2N, V2I, and V2P communications.
  • Network architectures and orchestration for end-to-end V2X traffic delivery and optimization.
  • Exploiting edge solutions for V2X.
  • Network functions and protocols to cope with V2X QoS requirements.
  • Exploitation and management of multiple radio access technologies (RATs) to improve reliability and coverage.
  • Radio Access Network (RAN) for more efficient utilization of radio resources for V2X traffic, enabling low-latency, ultra-high reliability.
  • Co-existence of heterogeneous use cases from radio, network, and application points of view.
  • Support of roaming and multi-operator scenarios for V2X use cases.
  • 5G radio-assisted positioning.
  • Demonstrations and Validations.

IMPORTANT DATES AND SUBMISSION

Prospective authors are invited to submit technical papers of their previously unpublished work. Accepted workshop papers will be part of the Conference Proceedings and will be uploaded to IEEE Xplore. Papers should follow the same Author guidelines of the general symposium, which are available at http://pimrc2018.ieee-pimrc.org/authors/submission-guidelines/.
